Training of nurses via simulation

In collaboration with CSSALT Shands Nurses are using simulation in their training.  The simulation sessions take place in Shands 2121 (ex-Cysto 1).  Courses taught include Critical Care, ACLS (practice and certification), and PEARS training. At The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, simulation is used frequently for hospital wide teaching.  A mannequin patient simulator is currently used for airway management training. Two different programs are run by Felipe Urdaneta and Chris Goldstein: one for anesthesia residents and the other for non-anesthesia personnel. For non anesthesia practitioners (ED personnel, ICU, pulmonary fellows for MICU, intensivists, and respiratory therapists from the Lake City VA medical center), there is a monthly half day course on airway management since 2009 that is a requirement to get credentialed for airway management.  For anesthesia residents and specifically for junior residents, since February 2010, 1 or 2 sessions per week are dedicated on airway management and rescue airway management. In AY 2010-2011, junior residents who have not been at the VA before will only be allowed to take call once they have taken the course and passed the simulation test.  Our simulator can be programmed to do a variety of airway issues like CICV (cannot intubate, cannot ventilate), tongue edema, laryngospasm, etc.
